I had very little idea about what my prescription meant until I started researching entries for this blog and buying glasses online.
Very admirably, Glasses Direct want to demystify the whole experience:

They've introduced a section of their site called Seeing Clearly to explain eye tests, prescriptions and the like. It's well worth a read.
